Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

I have finally figured out how to set up virtual media to boot from DVD, now I am trying to set up hardware raid before installing the OS.
I will be installing HPUX 11.23

The Docs that came with the A7173A does not say how to set up RAID 1 for the OS on these controllers.
I have the following:
# ioscan -fnkd mpt
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
================================================================
ext_bus 0 0/2/1/0 mpt CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI Ultra320 A6961-60111
/dev/mpt0
ext_bus 1 0/2/1/1 mpt CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI Ultra320 A6961-60111
/dev/mpt1
ext_bus 2 0/4/1/0 mpt CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI Ultra320 A6961-60111
/dev/mpt2
ext_bus 3 0/4/1/1 mpt CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI Ultra320 A6961-60111

I am assuming I need to load files, since it can not find the mtputil command...
I got as far as:

RUN an EXPERT RECOVERY SHELL...
But have no idea what I need to do next...

Re: Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

The A7173A is a dumb scsi hba, it CANNOT do a hardware RAID.

http://www.hp.com/products1/serverconnectivity/storagesnf2/ultra320/

You can only do a LVM mirroring on these external disks.

or

you need another smartarray controller (e.g. SA6402).

The rx2660 has internal SAS disks, connected to the default LSI chip or an optional P400 smartarray controller.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

Thank you! Just figured it out.
Yeah, asked for internal Hardware RAID and they installed two external SCSI controllers instead!

I have gone back to the vendor.

Re: Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

Are you trying to set up your OS on external SCSI disks atatched to your A7173A SCSI adapters?

Don't you have SAS Drives in your rx2660?

If you have SAS drives in your RX2660 -- then it has its own embedded RAID chip that allows you to carve a mirrored volume with an optional hot spare. You configuer it from the iLO/GSP

iS THE IOSCAN FROM A RECOVERY SHELL OR DID YOU INSTALL AN os?

What do you want to do now?

Creating a hardware RAID on the internal disks?

What controller is in use (default or optional P400)?

Hope this helps!

I do not have any external drives (storage arrays)
I have 8 internal drives that I want to do HW raid.
RAID 1 (OS)
RAID 10 rest of drives.

Re: Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

Ratzie..

Reset your server...
Go to the BIOS and find the option to interact with your RAID controller.

There you should be able to carve a mirrored (RAID1) volume with a hot spare if you wish.

The rest you can just configure however you want.

I just can;t recall the URL but that is what I followed with my rx2660s. rx6600s.

Re: Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

This is the default 8 port SAS controller (/dev/sasd1).

This controller can do 2 pairs of mirrored disks, not more.

I would recommend to create 1 such pair for the OS.

On the remaining disks you can use LVM to mirror or just stripe.

From EFI do

Shell> drivers
...
1F 02010400 B X X 1 2 LSI Logic Fusion MPT SAS Driver PciROM:01:01:00:001
...

note the "1F" at the beginning of the line in this example.

Now do

Shell> drvcfg -s 1f

to configure (and use your value instead of "1F").

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

It is special RAID. built in.

It can only do Mirror + HP (2 sets though)

Please try... go to BIOS and find the interface for you to carve your SAS Mirrored volume

Re: Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

Restart your OS.
Interrupt Boot Process (EFI Boot Manager)
Go to EFI Shell

Shell> drvcfg -s 20

20 is where your SAS embedded adapter is based on what you fursnihed.

After that.. it should be real EZ and intuitive to carve your RAID Volume for your bootdisk.

Re: Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

Ahhh yes, beginning to understand this.
I have the built in LSI RAID controller.

I never heard of this, but then again, this in my fist integrity server...
But, is this built in RAID actually hardware RAID?
I am use to using the: saconfig utility.

How does this compare to say a P411 controller?

Torsten.
Acclaimed Contributor

Re: Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

sautil/saconfig is for smartarray controllers.

For your controller you can use "sasmgr" for online activities.

However, for offline configuration use the procedure outlined above.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Hardware RAID rx2660 with SCSI Ultra320 A7173A

thanks for all the help.
Turns out the onboard LSI will only do hardware raid 1 and another raid of two disks.
this is from finally convincing HP support that I can not do hardware raid 1 on two disk, then hardware raid 10 on the rest of disks.

So they are ordering me a PA411 card.
