Heap Size Recommendation 64-bit HP UX JVM

Hi,

What is the current recommendation for the heap size of server nodes running on HP 64-bit JVM.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Heap Size Recommendation 64-bit HP UX JVM

Shalom,

The answer to this question is: It depends.

It depends on the data needs of the application.

It depends on how much physical memory the system has.

There are literally hundreds of factors that can figure in to the answer to your question.

Re: Heap Size Recommendation 64-bit HP UX JVM

Hi,

The application is a heavy load SAP NetWeaver Process Integration (XI), there is enough physical memory to have even more than 4GB Heap per server node, all inclusive.

Thanks.

I think you'll find some recommendations for this in SAP OSS notes - have you searched there?

I turned up several OSS notes on this, but as you don't mention versions, anbd there are many other things to consider it's a little hard to comment further

Re: Heap Size Recommendation 64-bit HP UX JVM

Hi,

The versions are,

OS: HP-UX (IA64W) B.11.23
VM: 1.4.2 1.4.2.15-070802-00:44-IA64W

The sap notes are not very specific, we run a 4 application servers environment, 2 AS have 4 server nodes each with 2GB heap, the other 2 AS have 3 server nodes each with 4GB heap, I have noticed that the first server nodes to fall are the one with 4GB heap, I don't know if there is a kwnow issue with 4GB heap server nodes in the HP JVM, a tuning issue or a misconfiguration issue. The answer I got from SAP is that I have to update the JVM.

So any help or additional info from you will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Heap Size Recommendation 64-bit HP UX JVM

Shalom,

If you want a 4 gb heap, quite possible under 64 bit java, I'd recommend having at least 8 GB of system memory.

swapinfo -tam

Again how much heap size you set should be based on application needs, total system memory and server purpose.
