Re: How do I know progrmatically if my kernel is 32 or 64?
# getconf KERNEL_BITS
...will tell you the "bitness" of your kernel, e.g. "64"
# getconf HW_CPU_SUPP_BITS
...will tell you the "bitness" your hardware will support, e.g. "32/64"
Regards!

Re: How do I know progrmatically if my kernel is 32 or 64?
Unless you are running on a PA-8200 processor or earlier, you are running a 64 bit kernel. All kernels running on PA-8500 or later, including Itanium, are 64-bit kernels.
I don't recall if 11.23 retained 32-bit kernel support for PA-8200 or not - the last OS rev to have the option for a 32-bit kernel was either 11.11 or perhaps 11.0 - that goes back far enough that there are more bit errors in the wetware DIMMs...

Why use wetware? It's on the web, now only if you can find it in BSC. :-)

Re: How do I know progrmatically if my kernel is 32 or 64?
use man getconf
getconf KERNEL_BITS
most probably it will be 64 bits

Re: How do I know progrmatically if my kernel is 32 or 64?
Assuming the OS is actually HP-UX here and the hardware was made in the last 10 or so years, you can assume it is 64 bit.
I have two D class systems in my office at home running 11.11 32 bit. They were manufactured before 1998. The D320 can only run 32 bit OS, the D380 could run either.
