How to create long usernames

We're on HP-UX 11.31 and activated the long username functionality using the lugadmin command but now how do we go about actually creating a user with a long username. Any time I try, it simply comes back with the error - "Login is invalid". I don't see any new switch mentioned in the man of useradd.

Re: How to create long usernames

Shalom,

Visit http://software.hp.com

Search for long user name.

You will see a downloadable depot that lets you do this.

I recommend against this, its not a perfect implementation.

Re: How to create long usernames

Any chance you can give more? I went to that location and did the search. Quite a few items came back but none that seem to address my problem. There was the one for Users and Groups but this matches the version we already have and this only fires up SAM which has the 8 character limitation. Is there a specific depot I should be looking for?

Re: How to create long usernames

Didi you disable 'pwgrd', if it was running, before enabling long user names?

Can you verify that long usernames are enabled by running:

lugadmin -l

And posting the output?

Re: How to create long usernames

Yes I disabled it before executing lugadmin and re-enabled it afterwards.

The output of the above is simply "256".

Re: How to create long usernames

Is your system trusted by chance? Does the /tcb directory structure exist?

If so, then long user names are not support.

A patch was released last year to disallow enabling long usernames if the system is trusted.

Re: How to create long usernames

Yes there is a tcb directory. Is it same to back out of the trusted mode? What will that break if anything?

Re: How to create long usernames

Do revert from trusted mode back to regular /etc/passwd usage, you use the command 'tsconvert -r'.

If you want to then convert to use /etc/shadow for password storage you can then use 'pwconv.
