How-to enable console settings to login to a K-Class server?

Hi All,
We have a N-class server running HP-UX 11i Operating system. I had to connect to the system via a console(not through the network).

Also we have a VT100 stand-alone console connected to it. When I switch on the console, it just shows the keys(F1, F2 etc...) in the bottom of the screen and I couldn't see any login prompt for the system.

I am not familiar with the operations of a VT100 console. I tried pressing some of the function keys to see whether I could get the login prompt to the system. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it.

May I know what steps I need to follow to login to the system?

If someone could help me out, it would be really great. Thanks for your time.

Thanks & Regards,

Karthik

Shalom,

If its an HP console, just holding the D key down during startup should reset configuration to a usable mode.

Then the function keys labelling should work and you should be able to make further configuration changes.

I do beleive the key on the front of the unit needs to be in the "service" position in order to have full console functionality......

I am digging way back here, so I could be mistaken

Hi Karthik,

Trace the serial cable back to the console connector on your GSP. Make sure there are no kinks or breaks, and that connections are tight.

VT100 console? You mean you have a working DEC model vt100 terminal -- like this? http://vt100.net/

Or do you have an HP branded terminal? HP has been making terminals since the 1970's and there are many, many models, and connection methods. I will assume that you have an HP terminal because it is displaying the softkey labels (a 'real' vt100 has *no* softkeys at all).

Start by resetting the terminal by powering it off, then press the D key and keep it down while you turn on the terminal. Release the D key when you see the terminal reset message.

Now some of the recent HP terminals have multiple ports. Make sure you are using serial port 1 and not serial port 2 or the printer port. And most important, the cable *MUST* be a printer cable, also known as a crossover or null-modem cable. Once this has been accomplished, press Enter and you'll see a system prompt. If the computer is not running, press CTRL-B and you'll get the GSP prompt (assuming the computer is plugged in).
