Re: How to find out which printer drivers are configured for which print queue

In the HP-UX world, there are usually no "drivers" for the printer. Instead, there are "model scripts".

(It will be easier to Google for something if you know its proper name.)

This procedure will apply for JetDirect (= network) printers only.

Run these commands:

cd /etc/lp/interface/model.orig
grep '^#SMODEL' *

If there are multiple network printers (and thus multiple files in the directory), the output will be several lines like this:

queuename:#SMODEL:2950:HP ColorLaserJet CP1510 Series:clj1510

The useful fields are:

  • queuename: the name of the print queue
  • 2950: the printer model ID (used when selecting a printer model with hppi or addqueue)
  • HP ColorLaserJet CP1510 Series: human readable model name

If multiple lines are displayed for one print queue, then the model script used with that queue is listed as usable with several printer models. The original model script templates for JetDirect printers are stored in /opt/hpnpl/sh directory.

For LPD (=remote) print queues, there will be no corresponding file in /etc/lp/interface/model.orig. The model script in the /etc/lp/interface directory will always be a copy of "rmodel" from /usr/lib/lp/model/ directory, which will only send the print job and its options to the remote destination as-is.  For a remote print queue, it is the responsibility of the remote destination to actually apply the options to the print job.
