How to remove swap from a failed disk?

rx5670 running 11.23

I have 2x36GB disk in vg00.

One of them has failed. It contained swap1, swap2 and swap4.

Is there any way to deactivate these swap partitions and remove the disk, while the machine is up?

Not with v2, no. This came in as a post-release enhancement to v3: http://docs.hp.com/en/5992-4174/ch04s05.html

Hi:

No, not unless you're running 11.31 and have 'swapoff'.

Prior to 11.31, you must edit '/etc/fstab' so that the secondary device swap's aren't mounted at boot/startup and then reboot to remove them.

Be guided, however, by:

Re: How to remove swap from a failed disk?

If I assume all the LVOLs are mirrored, there is no need to remove the swap. Just replace that disk. But it looks like there is only swap on this disk and the disk is unavailable already, so the system cannot use the swap any longer. If the disk was dead before the last boot the swap won't be activated. If the disk was going bad recently and it was unmirrored and used for swap, you should see it crashing anyway.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: How to remove swap from a failed disk?

Hello,

May I offer some additional advice, to protect
you agains future disasters:

a) You have set up unbalanced paging devices (swap areas). They do not have the same or similar size.

b) You have multiple swaps on the SAME
physical disks. This is against
best practices. If you ever start using swap,
your disk I/O will be very poor.

c) You are not mirroring your swaps.
Another bad design element. If a physical
disk fails, you are likely to crash the
server.

Cheers,
