How to update to a specific version of a kernel via RHN yum?

Latest default YUM update shows: # yum check-update
Loaded plugins: rhnplugin, security
Skipping security plugin, no data

kernel.x86_64 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 rhel-x86_64-server-5
kernel-devel.x86_64 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 rhel-x86_64-server-5
kernel-headers.x86_64 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 rhel-x86_64-server-5

But I want the version that's a generation behind which is - 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5.

How do I do that with Yum? I can downlod the packages manually and do rpm too -- no?

TIA.

Re: How to update to a specific version of a kernel via RHN yum?

Shalom,

To be totally certain you may want to run yum to download but not install the required rpm.

Then the rpm is on disk and you can use the rpm command to get specific details on the rpm.

Also, in relation to your prior question, yum does have a downgrade option.

With RHN, you have access to all versions of the Kernel and can download them to take a look at them, or take a look at the notes on the Red Hat website to get the information you are looking for.

To your last question.

You can:
1) Use yum to only download the rpm's and dependencies.
2) Download manually and use yum or rpm to do the install

Re: How to update to a specific version of a kernel via RHN yum?

The RHN repository seems to only have the latest versions of each package available.
On a RHEL 5 system, this command:

yum list available 'kernel*'

currently lists only the latest versions.

If you want older versions, it seems to be impossible with yum.

You must go to https://rhn.redhat.com and download the packages from there, then install them manually (e.g. with the "yum localinstall" or "rpm -ivh" commands).

Shalom again,

Older versions, even for previous major updates are available on the Red Hat website.

You can for internal reasons create your own yum repo for any version of RHEL

You may try below procedure

http://www.ultranetsolutions.com/Yum-downgrading-packages.html

I am not sure if this would happen for a kernel.
If kernel is avaialable on the site it should happen.
