There is an HP Internals book that was recently (?) published. I believe it is from HP Press (prentice hall IIRC). I suspect you could find it on most of the online places.

I received a copy recently but haven't had the time to look through it.

I've read several chapters and its a very good introduction to the internals. Reading this before going on the full course will stand you in good stead.

I have to confess that I don't remember who the authors are, just that there are two of them. As for getting a free copy, there are some strings - I'm supposed to review it if at all possible and feed errata back to the editors and authors.
