We use SPARK, I would recommend it:

Re: IP Messenger for Linux

If you mean an instant messaging client, Pidgin works reasonably well and is included by Red Hat. I assume SuSE also packages it since it's widely used.

The IM system to which you want to connect is also important because not all clients support all servers/protocols equally well.

Re: IP Messenger for Linux

well i was looking for a IP messenger only.

something which doesnt require a server to manage the hosts.

eg. myself n my colleague have a IP msgr, both of us on the same LAN sud be able to chat n transfer files without any 3rd party involved.

Not sure what you meant here: "something which doesnt require a server to manage the hosts.", but I've setup internal-only Jabber/XMPP servers for multiple customers using JabberD2.x, and it's worked great for them:

Btw, we used pidgin as the client, but many different clients support XMPP.

He's looking for a P2P messenger, setting up a jabber server is not a bad idea, but if you don't have a dedicated server you can try one of these:

Windows Only

Linux/Windows (Java):

Re: IP Messenger for Linux

sorry for not replying earlier.
yes i was looking at p2p options. our client needed something with which their office linux users could instant chat and at the same time transfer files between themselves.

Re: IP Messenger for Linux

For file transfer there's also Giver, i'm not sure it supports chat... Too bad it's only for Gnome.

Re: IP Messenger for Linux

For the record, there's a KDE variation that can work with giver also!!!, it's called Kepas

Re: IP Messenger for Linux

I think he's looking for something akin to Winderz Messenger. Is there such a CLI-driven app the can be used in either a RedHat/Fedora or Debian/Ubuntu environment? I dunno that one, myself, but wouldn't mind learning of one...

Cheers;
Ed
