We have a vg00 disc drive problem and if we can build a replacement mirrored pair without booting from tape or net we will only need a reboot, not longer downtime, to swap the drives out.
In the early days this could be done, because you could build atlernate boot discs with a different rev OS without bringing the system down.

Re: Ignite build spare drives while system running
If you had 11.23 you can get DRD for this and use that.

SolutionIf you have mirrored correctly to a second disk you can rebuild your mirrors without taking down the system.
You don't need to use your Ignite restore at all.
All you need to do depening on the bad drive's state is:
lvextend -m 0 or lvsplit the logical volumes essentially breaking the mirrors,
Replace the drive.
pvcreate and rebuild the mirrors.

Re: Ignite build spare drives while system running
A dd to /dev/null of the c3 drive is ok. No errors. A dd of the c0 drive is still 'running' after a day and a half. It's an unkillable process, so it's in the depths of a read system call that never returns.
Syslog records no errors other than the stale extents.
That's why I was hoping to build replacement drives with Ignite and only bring the server down for long enough to swap them over.
