Is it possible to boot off the system from a ignite tape which is not local to the system ?

What means "not local"? Fiber channel connected?

Do you mean, boot from the ignite tape which is taken from some other system?
If so, yes you can boot and restore the image.
If you want to boot from the remote tape drive, it will fail. Ignite is supported only on local drives.

SolutionBoot from the install DVD. The booted kernel knows how to handle fibre channel devices and is able to access to tape.
Now select advanced, restore from tape and select the drive.
You need to load the tape manually.
