Igniting a vPar for restore into a Virtual Machine

Hi there,

We ignited our vPar (hpux 11.31, vPars sw A.05.05.01, Ignite C.7.11.444) for restore purposes into a Virtual Machine... all went ok until almost finish then it send a "FAILURE" message, reboot the virtual machine and started with this messages in the console:

"init command is respawning too rapidly"

I decided to reboot and the system went panic!

Is valid wath we re trying to do (igniting a vPar into a VM)?

Is there any considerations that we have to address regarding this issue?

Any help would be appreciated.

is not really meaningful.

Can you boot into single user mode?

Make sure it boots vmunix, not vpmon.

Let me make a brief explanation:

1. Took an Ignite from our source vPar to tape.
2. Boot from that tape and got the /opt/ignite/bin/itool, customize some fields and go.
3. Then the restore did some stuff and then reboots and then try to build a kernel and is here in some point that a "FAILURE" appears and the server restart (I can't take it because it is in server's console).
4. After this second reboot the server sends the "init command is respawning too rapidly" messages and when it is restarted the whole system (both virtual machine host and guest) becomes panic and reboot the host.

Hi Andres,

As a pointer you will need the following software installed on your vPar before taking the make_tape_recovery image:

HPVM-Guest
VMGuestLib
VMGuestSW
AVIO-GVSD (if using AVIO storage)
AVIO-IGSSN (if using AVIO network)

These are required by the server when booting as a VM

Hi there,

This very problem was solved by upgrading first the hp-ux ver from 11.23 to 11.31 and then took a full backup and then restore to the virtual machine just data/apps.

This procedure let us move some systems from vpar running on a Superdome to a virtual machine running on a blade server.
