Installing HPUX on an Integrity blade

Just purchased a new C7000 enclosure with 2 Integrity blades (BL860c). There is no DVD drive. How am I going to get HPUX installed? Through some of the threads I've read, it mentioned to install it via the iLO; however, when I clicked on the "Virtual Media" I just get a blank page.

Also, does this model of blade have any mirroring capability by default, or do I have to purchase a mirroring controller?

Thanks

Re: Installing HPUX on an Integrity blade

Is it a BL860c or BL860c i2?

This makes a difference (iLO2 vs. iLO3; different disk controllers).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Installing HPUX on an Integrity blade

Shalom,

You could boot the system off a network based Ignite server and completely install without a DVD.

I see to reason for a mirroring controller.

This procedure has a network based boot built in:

Re: Installing HPUX on an Integrity blade

Hello Steve,

Thanks for the quick response. I have the BL860c i2. Not sure what that means.

Also, going back to my 2nd question, is there a controller built-in for mirroring, or do I have to buy it separately?

Re: Installing HPUX on an Integrity blade

By the way, I have a very old ignite image of HPUX, which I want to delete and rebuild again. My question is how do I remove an old copy of ignite image?

Re: Installing HPUX on an Integrity blade

If your version of Ignite is less than C.7, you'll have to swremove Ignite. Your i2 blades (the very latest) cannot be installed without the latest version of Ignite. Once you have loaded C.7.11.144, you can install the standard image that comes with Ignite. Download from:

https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=IGNITEUXB

Virtual Media requires a purchased license from HP to enable this iLO feature.

Re: Installing HPUX on an Integrity blade

My team and I have decided to install a fresh version of HPUX 11.31 VSOE into the new blade and then making a golden copy from that using Dynamic Root Disk. Since there is no DVD that comes with this blade enclosure, how do I even get started?

Thanks

Re: Installing HPUX on an Integrity blade

Shalom,

An old ignite image will probably not install easily on this new hardware.

i2 blades are Itanium 2 blades.

You would want to use a Golden image which is more hardware independent, to migrate a system configuration to this hardware. Make a Golden Image and then boot and install from that.

http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90772/ch07s02.html

It is nice to have Ignite infrastructure for server recovery and replication.

You can not migrate and change a major OS. You would need to use 11iv2 or 11iv3 image taken off an IA-64 Itanium 2 system to this hardware. More than likely it would have to be based on a recent OE(Operating Environment).

If you can't setup an Ignite server, ust purchase a USB DVD drive. Your VSOE DVD should be 2011 to support installation on the i2 blade.

Re: Installing HPUX on an Integrity blade

The integrated smartarray controller can be used either in HBA mode (direct disk access) or in RAID mode (hardware RAID).

You will see the current setting during boot to EFI.

Use saupdate.efi (from firmware bundle available at hp.com) to change the setting.

Hope this helps!

Re: Installing HPUX on an Integrity blade

Instructions are attached.

Regarding the installation:

You can install via

- iLO (vMedia) - make sure all firmware is up to date)
- external DVD drive connected to the blade
- external DVD assigned via the enclosure
- ignite (this is the fastest)
- drive roaming (insert a set of disks that have the OS installed)

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

That's true. But you can have a trial license for unlocking iLO Advanced Features (like Virtual Media) It is valid for 60 days.

On BL8x0 i2 blades the license is included (and for those prices it better be! ;-)

The button to launch vMedia is hidden in the upper right title bar when you select 'Virtual Media' in the iLO3 web interface.
