LT04- Enable encryption without software
Hi,
We recently bought HP StorageWorks SB1760 Tape Blades. We own the tape drives, but the backup scripts was run by the third party. It has been decided that it is our responsible to create the encryption key and pass it to the third party. It is our responsibility create and manage the keys.
(Third party already said they will not use the HP protector software for the backup processs)
How do we create the key in the first place?
If we can create the key, then I am hoping to manage the keys a file manually.

Re: LT04- Enable encryption without software
Why this BL1760c widget was purchased without this question having been addressed is an obvious question, but I digress...
Here are the previous hardware-level threads:
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1446295
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1171171
With VMS software:
http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1444
Or depending on how you want to run this, some of these StorageWorks widgets (if you're working with the hardware encryption) use a dongle, though it doesn't look that the SB1760c widget offers that feature. See the ITRC postings for a VMS tool that might help here, or see that lattermost posting for how this works with BACKUP encryption, or have a chat with HP support about your options here.
You do get to sort out how this works best for y'all, and I'd most definitely run the implementation and the risks past the higher-ups, as you're going to be exposing your key here. Your outside provider is sending this risk back to you, which means you then get to escalate this risk up your management chain.

Re: LT04- Enable encryption without software
Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
Now it is been agreed to buy the "HP Data Prot Stater Pack for HP-UX" by us, and the thrid party will use this software to encrypt.
I have read about HP Data Protector, but "HP Data Prot Stater Pack for HP-UX" has the same functions too??
I googled it.. but can't find much information.

Re: LT04- Enable encryption without software
This is the VMS operating system forum, and either that's the wrong package for your needs here, or you're not running VMS here.
If you're really running HP-UX here, then this thread needs to be moved to a forum with a more appropriate audience.
