LUNS not getting visible

Hi,

I have configured a rx2660 server and presented LUNS to it from EVA4400. The OS installed is 11i v2.

When the system is shutdowned and then powered on, all the LUNS are visible and everything is fine...

Now when i reboot the system, the LUNS disappears...

1. When I do
# vgdisplay -v vg01

vgdisplay: Volume group not activated.
vgdisplay: Cannot display volume group "vg01".

2. When I do
# vgchange -a y vg01

vgchange: Warning: Couldn't attach to the volume group physical volume "/dev/dsk/c4t0d1":
The path of the physical volume refers to a device that does not
exist, or is not configured into the kernel.
vgchange: The path of the physical volume refers to a device that does not

vgchange: Warning: couldn't query physical volume "/dev/dsk/c4t0d1":
The specified path does not correspond to physical volume attached to
this volume group
vgchange: Warning: couldn't query physical volume "/dev/dsk/c6t0d1":

this volume group
vgchange: Warning: couldn't query all of the physical volumes.
vgchange: Couldn't activate volume group "vg01":
Quorum not present, or some physical volume(s) are missing.

3. But when I do
# ioscan -fnCdisk

It shows all physical volume as CLAIMED
... and then ALLOWS me to ACTIVATE Volume Group "vg01"

The file /etc/lvmtab also looks fine...

Can ne1 help me out with this problem. Its urgent...

Regards,
Rajiv

Re: LUNS not getting visible

No I have not tried it...

But will that make any difference...

Cos after giving a proper shutdown command:
# shutdown -h now

the LUNS gets visible... its only during reboot that causes a problem...

Is it b'cos of some OS patch???

Re: LUNS not getting visible

I have noticed that the EVA(4400) firmware is old (ie. 9001000) as well as the switch(5.3.0b)...
Is it b'cos of it???

Re: LUNS not getting visible

Agree with previous writer that the EVA might not be ready after boot to present them after the FC card gets initialized.

Older firmware that might need upgrade.

Might want to see if putting a ioscan (with no options) in the lvmrc script before it activates all of the vgs help. This might "wakeup" the eva controller and make it more reliable.

Agree this is a stopgap till you diagnose the real issue. Any other systems on the san experiencing the same issue with that EVA ?

Re: LUNS not getting visible

It might be worth doing a low level check too. When the server has rebooted, have a look at the fibre cards to see if you have link lights on or not. Then have a look at the switches to see if the fibre cards are loged in. If you are using Brocade switches, then you can use this command from the switch: -
# switchshow
have a look for the port number that the cable is pluged into, and see if you can see the WWN. If you can see the WWN, the basic connection is there. It may be a masking issue on the EVA.

Re: LUNS not getting visible

Hi Rajiv
Are using any Multipath Software.

Sometimes it is possible that the Multipath Software is positioned to run after the vgactivation . Which could cause the LUNS not available when vg activation takes.

Re: LUNS not getting visible

Hi,

Are you able to see other's luns if not then check you cables which is connected to Storege box and check your syslog.log file also.

Before shutting down the box are you able to see those LUN's ?
