LVM vs VxVM
What is your opinion of VxVM?
What about performance versus LVM?
What about administration?
I'd appreciate your feedback,
Thanks,
P.S. This topic was discussed in 2003 but it's obviously been a while since then, so i wanted some new point of views...

Re: LVM vs VxVM
I might be mistaken, but I always thought that VxVM is there mostly to help shops that prefer using Volume Manager across all platforms for the sake of consistency, and for cases where LVM's feature set is not complete enough for the task at hand such as when running advanced clusters.
LVM is limited but does the job for many sites. The tendency since many years have been to move all advanced features to storage arrays anyway. So my suggestion is that you stick with LVM if it fits your requirements, especially if you're already familiar with it.
If you want to compare both, be sure to use LVM 2 which has been released with 11iv3, as it brought on some new features.
Good luck

Re: LVM vs VxVM
What specifically do you want to do with your volumes? Is there something that LVM won't handle? DO you use VxVM on other platforms?
If LVM is "good enough", I'd stick with that. If you are on 11.31 you should consider LVM 2.1 for all but your root VG:

Re: LVM vs VxVM
Well, to answer Ducan...
1) Nothing out of the ordinary
2) LVM Handles everthing in our env.
3) Nope I've never used VxVM
The reason I was thinking about working with VxVM is because it comes up here and there and I thought perhaps it was "better" than LVM. Also, because it's never bad to learn something new but if it's nothing ground breaking or revolutionary, then I guess i'm sticking with old faithful..
Thanks Again!
