Re: Lightweight file server suggestions....?
Shalom,
Let me clarify.
CentOS is my first choice. Sometimes I post answers in stream of consciousness node.
Something else to consider. If Centos continues its practice of not releasing interim patch set's you are perfectly entitled to take the source from RH and rpmbuild it.
I may have to to do that because RHCS update 5 is a nest of bugs.
Why I mentioned Ubuntu: Because I had to use it to make my wireless work. I'd be fat and happy with FC 6 right not but got tried of trying and fail to hack the wireless into condition after every kernel patch(there were many).
Ubuntu starts out with a very basic release that fits on a CD. You can actually test drive it on a CD boot prior to doing the install. I really liked that feature.
I also mention Ubuntu as an option because they show up in distrowatch.org as a market leader and have for somet ime.
If you are looking for specialty distro's and there are those aimed at this segment, distrowatch.org is a great place to find distro's for almost any need.

Re: Lightweight file server suggestions....?
Hi John,
As you mentioned DSL, I just had a quick look, and that does appear to have an NFS server.
A bit of Googling shows that Vista and XP also have NFS clients via Services for UNIX or Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications(although I've never used them) so you may well be able to avoid the overhead of running Samba.
Cheers,
Rob

Re: Lightweight file server suggestions....?
Rob,
I would have never even though to look for NFS services for any M$ product. I'm not sure what prompted you to do so, but I am very grateful to you for mentioning it to me.
If I can eliminate the need to run Samba I would be a rather happy camper. I will have to look into that a little more deeply in the near future.
Of course, it will also have to be 'as time permits'.
Considering how many things are now falling into that category in my life, the completion dates of many of my personal projects seem to be getting pushed further and further back.... :-/
BTW
Steven,
I did a little searching yesterday on your suggestion for the web site in your last post. You mention that it is www.distrowatch.org but all I was able to find was an http://www.distrowatch.com
If this is not the same site, please let me know, but for now I am trying to do some reading there.
