Linux bare metal recovery - suggestion needed

i know a system admin is expected maintain backups of applications and dbs and OS config of a system.
is a system admin (Linux) expected to maintain a bare-metal recovery of a system as well.
can someone please suggest me some Foss methods of doing it. do such recovery mechanisms map all the LUNs also?

Depending on your grade of server automation and provisioning, this may also include lun assignment.

Some admins rely on initial deployment and have a configuration management tool (floss: puppet, cfengine and the like; commercial: e.g. hp server automation) that may be used to restore a server to a known state.

You may also have a look at Clonezilla (http://clonezilla.org/) and System Imager (http://wiki.systemimager.org/index.php/Main_Page) that may deploy a previously saved image of a server.

Other users may put the whole storage to a san and use snapshot techniques to freeze a server state so that they can recover it easily.
