Linux upgrade

I'm considering doing a linux kernel upgrade from 2.6.16.21-0.8 to SLES 10.0 2.6.16.60-0.33. Currently running PSP for SLES 10 (x86_64) V 8.11.

Are there any considerations or gotchas I need to consider before upgrading?

The reason I'm asking this, is I noted there's a new version of cpq_cciss out, and the notes state that it only supports a limited number of kernels (not including 2.6.16.60-0.33). I don't believe this particular rpm is an issue, as we use no local drives on the blades at all - everything is SAN based

However, would welcome any input from anybody with more experince

Shalom,

PSP functionality may stop and have to reinstall it. Make sure PSP is certified on that kernel. PSP usually installs its own kernel and that does have special functionality.

Check your application software for the new kernel version to be sure everything is going to work.

That's the problem. This kernel version isn't supported by PSP (it's newer than any on the rest of the list). I have already done a couple of test blades and they worked without issue and all PSP funnctionality is working ok.

Do you know where I can find a bit more detail of why the PSP puts it's own kernel onto the server and what's actually in there?

If you upgrade the kernel it's best to boot from the current kernel. Install the new kernel next to it.
Remove the current PSP pack, boot from the new kernel and install the latest PSP pack.

Done this two weeks ago at a customer site, worked without any problem.

Important thing is to check the release notes if the PSP supports your new kernel. I opened a case with HP the other day and they weren't prepared to help me further as long as I didn't use a supported kernel.

Well then its simple.

If you want PSP functionality wait for a version of PSP to be released that supports the new kernel. Halt the upgrade plan until that time.

Unfortunately, there are other drivers for me upgrading, so I may have to do without PSP until HP catch up.
