Login incorrect

Hi,
I am facing a peculiar problem ..My Hp N-class machine running 11i was not allowing any logins ..the momenet you telnet to the machine it will give you login prompt and if you type any nis username or even root at the login prompt it says login incorrct ..it does not ask for the password and the same thing happens at console ...The only option is to hard boot the machine .Thnen it works fine.
Any clues???

Sameer:

Any message in the syslog.log? Any file system is full (eg: root or /var). what about wtmp and btmp files? any message when system reboots? is there any process running on the system that locks the login process? Did you change anything on the global profile file or inetd.sec file?

Re: Login incorrect

What does you /etc/nsswitch.conf file entry look like for passwd?

It should be something like:

passwd: files nis

Was the machine bound to an NIS server when you were having problems? What did ypwhich show? What about people that were already logged in? Could they work?
We really need a bit more information to effectively help you.
