Completely free ... ( That's the idea of Linux )
What you have to pay for is :
The distrib ( if you want to have it on CD )
-> you could also download it from the net for free
The documentation ( on paper / CD )
The support ( But you also have plenty *free" forums that can help )

If you want to install secure Linux from HP, you need to buy license per system.
Other Linux distribution company have FTP site for free download.

there is nothing stopping you from downloading it and using it for whatever purpose you please without paying a dime. you can even sell your own version of linux (and make money on it) if you want, as long as you deliver the source code you used with it.
Take care though, for software like oracle, lotus notes, ito agents etc... you still have to pay licenses.
