Management Utilities for Proliant 6500 & Linux 2.6

Hi there,

I hope this is the right forum to ask on - I'm new here - but I was hoping someone could advise me which management utilities are supported for the Proliant 6500 running the 2.6 kernel.

My distro is neither Suse nor RedHat, but it supports RPMs, so I searched <> for this model & each of the Linux variants listed - all I can find under "Software - System Management" is the "HP Server Diagnostics" utility which appears to be a Windows executable.

I downloaded some days ago the "Managing ProLiant servers with Linux HOWTO" from HP's documentation, and it talks about the `hpasm` utilities. Are these available for the Proliant 6500?

All I want is for my server to send me an email when it encounters any problems with the power-supply or hard-drives, so it seems to me this could be achieved by monitoring syslog for any events pertaining to the RAID array or whatever. Sound reasonable? Does anyone have any other suggestions on how this might be achieved?

Thanks in advance for any advices,

aB.

Hi,

first please note that you are using a unsupported linux distribution on a old server, means nobody can say if it will work ;-)

Have look at the following similar thread:

Yes, the PSP install script runs only on supported distributions (like SLES 8 or SLES 9), i have no idea how to modify it so it will run on Suse 9.2 professional.

There is a document called "Managing ProLiant servers with Linux - HowTo" at http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00223285/c00223285.pdf
The chapter "Manual Installation" describes the installation without the script simply using the rpm's.

Following this instructions you should be able to install the psp on your server.

For download go to
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/21342.html
or
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/22000.html

This are the PSP's for SLES 9 and RHEL 4, which are both based on kernel 2.6 and RPM.
Simply chosse one and download.
Try the manual installation as described in the document Managing ProLiant servers with Linux - HowTo".
Further information can be found at:

Re: Management Utilities for Proliant 6500 & Linux 2.6

Hi Kai-Uwe,

Thanks for your help - I'm sorry for not explaining my problem very well. I must've posted late at night, or something!

I had in fact found the links mentioned in the other thread & which you pasted, and I was trying to work from the "Managing ProLiant servers with Linux HOWTO" you mention.

What I don't understand is that neither the download page for version 7.2 of the ProLiant Support Pack for SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 [1] nor the download page for version 7.21 of the ProLiant Support Pack for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 [2] mention my model of Proliant, the 6500. They only seem to mention much later models.

Are you suggesting that the HPASM tools are largely model-agnostic? All I really want to do is monitor the RAID array & PSUs for drive failure, and quiet the fans a little, if that's possible.

I know my distro is unsupported, but I'd have thought that if I can find the right RPM - for a Proliant 6500 under 2.6 - I can hack it to run on my system.
I heard that some versions of the hpasm don't work under 2.6 kernels - do you have any idea if the hpasm-7.2.1-313.rhel4.i386.rpm might? More to the point, is it the right version for an older Proliant like my PII 6500?

Many thanks for your help,

aB.

Re: Management Utilities for Proliant 6500 & Linux 2.6

Hi,

the current PSP is official supported only for the current servers like ML, DL and BL.
The agents are SNMP based, they should work on older HP/Compaq servers too. I tried this on a PL 1600 with SLES 9 and had no problems.
Give it a try and you will know if it is working or not ;-)

Re: Management Utilities for Proliant 6500 & Linux 2.6

Sorry to take so long to get back to this thread... I got kinda side-tracked by some other stuff.

I've done some reading this evening on SNMP <>, so I hope I've got an outline now of what's going on:

* Being an SNMP "agent", `hpasm` runs on the Proliant & I can install SNMP network-management software on any system on the network which will connect to this & log things what are happening (hard-drive failure &c).

* It is not known whether `hpasm` will work with the hardware in my unsupported old Proliant, but the answer is "probably".

I feel much clearer after this additional reading, and actually starting on the process, so I'll crack on with it & see how it goes.

Thanks for the help!!
