Memory on Linux

Memory on Linux

I have a VMware server running 3 instances of Linux with 2Gb RAM each.

All my linux server constantly shows memory utilisation above 80% all the time even if no users are logged in.

1 Linux server is running apache
2nd is running DB and
3rd is running a java app.

Is there some issue with VMWare and multiple linux OS's

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Re: Memory on Linux

Hi,

No worry, Linux does not really use all the memory, but cashes a lot. If you use top, you can see that.

Re: Memory on Linux

there is option in vmware to restrict on memory usage, try that option,

you'll find it in main vmware options

Re: Memory on Linux

Yes i think it's the total memory utilisation including Buffer cache. Buffer cache use free memory to cache I/O but when needed by application Buffer caches are reduce.

Re: Memory on Linux

Rouchon,
I thought buffer cache is the metadata cache of the files and cache are actual reference to the file. In this case wouldn't both buffer and cache be release if additional memory is needed?
