Min password length - u_minlen

Hi all,

Alpha DS10/Tru64 V5.1B.

/etc/auth/system/default has u_minlen set to 10. and password minimum length for per user is specified 6. I would like to know which one will take predence by default. Whether system look for default database or per user setting?, and any specific flag is there to change the precedence?

Thanks
Archie

Re: Min password length - u_minlen

Per-user settings will always take precedence over system defaults. I do not believe there is any way to change the precedence.

Re: Min password length - u_minlen

Archie,

See also "u_minchosen", from "man prpasswd":
u_minchosen
The number in this field specifies the minimum length of the user
account password for user-chosen passwords only. If the field is zero,
a dynamic value is calculated as defined in the Green Book.

Re: Min password length - u_minlen

Mark & Ann,
Thanks for the response.

I just modified u_minlen to 10 in default db. Then I created the new user with the password length of 6, it accepted!. How come this? also if I give too short password such as length of < 5, it does not accept, why?

Re: Min password length - u_minlen

Possibly a silly question, but are you sure you're running Enhanced Security? The password length systems are only effective in that mode. If you're not sure, do "rcmgr get SECURITY". Only if it returns "ENHANCED" are you actually in Enhanced Security.
