Move SAN boot vPar to new server

I am replacing an rx8640 with a new rx8640. I have 2 vPars booted from local storage. I plan to do an ignite recover to get these to the new server. However, I also have 6 vPars that are SAN boot. Can someone offer some advice on migrating these SAN boot vPars to a new server?

Re: Move SAN boot vPar to new server

One question first:

"replacing an rx8640 with a new rx8640"

Really true or a typo?
(just to be sure the hardware is very similar or not)

Hope this helps!

Re: Move SAN boot vPar to new server

Not a typo. The server we are replacing will be reused elsewhere and we prefer to stick with the same model. The new server has more capacity than the existing one.

Another question...the current server has dual 1000bt and dual 2G HBA. The new server has dual 1000bt and dual 4G HBA. Will the hardware path to the chassis, slot, and port change because of the difference in the HBAs?

Re: Move SAN boot vPar to new server

I'm not sure about the new HBA's, they may get new device files.

I would do this, because it is IMHO the most safest way:

1. make a good documentation about your configuration and backups

2. ignite the local disks

3. bring the new box in place and restore the image to the local disks

4. boot in non-vPar mode

5. adjust the zoning/presentation

(in non-vPar mode you have control over all the HBA's to get device files and WWN's)

6. adjust/modify your SAN based vPars

7. reboot in vPar mode

Hope this helps!
