NFS error

HI experts,

Everyday we are receiving lots of alerts (nfs: server yyy02 not responding, timed out/nNODENAME:xxx06.xxx.com) …while i check i see that i am able to access the nfs server ...this is what i get from /var/log/messages

Jul 12 01:34:01 xxx06 kernel: nfs: server yyy02 not responding, timed out

Jul 12 01:34:01 xxx06 kernel: nfs_statfs: statfs error = 5

Jul 13 01:34:03 xxx06 kernel: nfs: server yyy02 not responding, timed out

Jul 13 01:34:03 xxx06 kernel: nfs_statfs: statfs error = 5

Jul 14 01:34:03 xxx06 kernel: nfs: server yyy02 not responding, timed out

Jul 14 01:34:03 xxx06 kernel: nfs_statfs: statfs error = 5

In fstab the timeout value is 50.

yyy02:/MicroStrategy/Desktop/XSLs/Maintenance      /yyy02/Maintenance nfs     soft,tcp,intr,timeo=50  0 0

I think for a few sec. the client is not able to communicate with the nfs server so that it is showing error msg. Now if i increase the timeout value will it solve the issue?

xxx06:-Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 9)
       2.6.9-89.31.1.ELsmp

yyy02:- windows server

Please let me know your concern.

Regards,

Ani

Re: NFS error

Shalom,

The answer to your question is you can't be sure.

If the source of the problem is a network issue, time timeout may help.

If the source of the problem is the NFS server is flakey, the error message is legimitate and needs to be dealt with at the server.

It all depends on WHY the problem is happening.

Re: NFS error

Hi Ani,

>while i check i see that i am able to access the nfs server

Seems like there is no issue with nfs i believe you can mount to specific folder and to confirm this you may execute command df to mount point.

1.It's slightly issue with internal NW where and you might need to check with your network team why always getting such error.

2. Based on log, it's constantly timeout after 1 hour, you may check internally what is process running on your network / server during that time.

3. If there everything is ok i mean from server/network side, how about if your try to increase value time out > 1 hour ( i don't think this is good practice to implement).

Thanks

Re: NFS error

additional to your question

>which service i have to restart ? nfs & portmay? will it work

You always can restart internet service

#service xinetd (restart/start/stop/status)

Thanks
