How do I figure out which server a nis home directory is physically located?

Do you mean nfs or cifs instead of nis?
Otherwise:
ypwhich (shows which server client is bound to)
domainname (what domain am I a member of)

ypcat -k auto.home | grep userid

Using bdf(1m) should work too:
bdf ~userid
bdf ~userid
