Need input username and pwd in single user mode
Our HP-UX system is in trust mode.
The root account is locked after incorrectly input the root pwd for several times which exceeding the auth_MaxRetries value.
Finally we found the root's correct password.
We restart the system into single user mode and maintenance mode, it notified me input the username and password. We input the correct one, we got:
"Authentication incorrect"
How can we change the root's password and unlock the root account when the system is in Trust mode and the root account is locked?
Thanks a lot!

Re: Need input username and pwd in single user mode
It sounds like someone enabled single user login -- a very bad idea.
There isn't anything you can do on this system. The single user login was designed to prevent any possibility of getting to single user mode to modify the root password unless you know the single user login password. About all you can do is to take out the disk and put vgimport it into another HP-UX system. You could then mount the / volume and manually edit the passwd file.

Re: Need input username and pwd in single user mode
Dear Bill,
How to edit the passwd ? Or can I just modify BOOT_AUTH setting in /etc/default/security file and boot it into single user mode ?

Yes, that would turn off the single user login requirement.
Or you can boot the Install DVD and start a recovery shell.

Re: Need input username and pwd in single user mode
If you are sure you know what the root password is, then you should be able to login via the systems console.
root login via the console should always work. And the act of logging in to the console as root should also activate the root account.

Re: Need input username and pwd in single user mode
Dear Patrick,
Thank you for your reply, that may help us resolve this in an easy way. The admin must recall the correct password.
