Npar Ignite Image to Vpar

I am trying to take an Ignite Npar tape and have somewhat successfully put it on our Vpar. Problem is when I try to boot, it says "kernel is not relocatable". Is it possible to take an n/par image and create a vpar system? I have a RP8420 with 4 npars, the last is the vpar with one vpar and I want to create the second vpar using the npar Ignite image. HP-UX 11.11 PA-RISC.
Points to be awarded.
Thanks,
Richard

Solution

Re: Npar Ignite Image to Vpar

The software on a vPar must include the vPar software itself. This software make the kernel reelocatable.

1. Make a backup from another vPar and install it on the new vPar.

2. Install the vPar software on the source machine and make an buckup then

3. stop all vPars on the system and install the backup on the disk. Boot the system to non-vpar mode and install the vpar software.
Start the system in vPar mode.

You cannot install your tape directly to a vpar!

Hope this helps!

Richard,

I am not an expert with ignite, but maybe this thread will be able to give you some info.

Re: Npar Ignite Image to Vpar

yes you can do this, it requires the Npar to have the vpar software installed and in the kernel, it also requires you make /stand/vmunix relocatable for a vpar to work.
Check the /stand/vmunixs using the vparreloc command

Pick one of the 3 choices I posted. Sorry, forgot to say choose 1 or 2 or 3.

Hope this helps!

Re: Npar Ignite Image to Vpar

Some more information:

A "normal" kernel will always be loaded to a fixed position into the RAM - more or less. Since another vPar is running, the location is already occupied. This is the reason for your error message. The vPar software is modifying the kernel and makes it "movable".
If you can bring down the other vPar, you can boot the whole npar from your ignite tape and restore the image to the intended disk. Now start the /stand/vmunix from this disk and install vPars. After this reboot and start /stand/vpmon from the original disk to run your first vPar again.
Maybe quicker solution than to install the software on the source machine (reboot needed) and backup it again.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
