Number of master servers in an NIS Domain

please guide if my perception is correct

1) in an NIS doamin we can have more than 1 Slave servers serving the NIS Requets.
2)A master NIS server can serve only one NIS Domain.

Can We have more than one master server in a NIS Domain say testdom.

Re: Number of master servers in an NIS Domain

I believe there was a thread recently where the same question was asked. Master means one.

1) Yes.
2) I believe so. I hadn't thought about it
before, but if the NIS server is tied to the
(NIS) domain name, then I don't see how you
could have multiple (NIS) domain names on one
system.

And my opinion is there.

Now, I believe that you could divide the maps
(for one NIS domain) into groups, and have
one master server for one set of maps, and a
different master server for a different set
of maps. So, in that very limited sense, you
could have multiple master servers for one
domain, but for each map (I believe/claim
that) you can have only one master server.

I've never actually seen a domain which had
more than one master server. Perhaps it
would make some sense in a very large, very
busy domain, or one with very slow computers
or network connections.

Re: Number of master servers in an NIS Domain

hey sujit,

I have never come across a scenario where i saw multiple master servers. Like Master is one and it has multiple slave servers as his replicas.

When master goes down, the first available slave server started functioning as master depend upon the configuration and gives control back to Master server, when it comes up.
