OS Recovery from tape

Hi,
I have backup of my HP Unix 11.11 on the tape and now i want to test this backup. I have another HP machine and i want to know the step by step procedure to restore the backup from the tape to verify validity of my backup. Can anyone tell me the procedure of OS recovery from tape?

Re: OS Recovery from tape

The step-by-step procedure used to do the
restore operation might depend on the
procedure used to make the backup tape.

Are you offering any clues?

Re: OS Recovery from tape

Dear Salman

Once u have a recovery image on tape or ignite-ux server, recovering a failed system is easy.

1.if a hard disk failed, replace it

2.boot from your recovery tape or system

3.wait for the recovery to complete

4.Once the system comes back up, verify the system configuration and recover the latest options of files from the last system backup. Ensure that u don't recover o/s files as this can create unexpected results

thanks and regards

Re: OS Recovery from tape

Hello,

also make sure that the test machine is the same model as the one that the backup was taken on. If you attempt to restore the image to a different platform, you may run into troubles or fail completely.

Re: OS Recovery from tape

hi,
i am using "make_tape_recovery -Av" to take backup on tape.
Now, on another system (a test HP Server), i have inserted the tape. Now, i will reboot the server and will face some screen shots during recovery. This is what i want to ask if some one has some guide to follow the steps to perform this kind of recovery.
Thanks

Re: OS Recovery from tape

Hi,

At PDC, use the SEA option. Search for the tape device and then boot the system using the ID

If the tape device is P5 then type,

BO P5

Interact with ISL, Say No. From there it is normal recovery.

Cheers,

Ravi.

Re: OS Recovery from tape

Hi,

Both the machine should have same model no.

(1)Inser the tape

iosacn -fnC tape

insf -e

(2) check the tape status

mt -f /dev/rmt/xmn status

(3)Interrupt the boot sequence
Main menu> sea ( To search bootable tape device)

Intereact the IPL >n

(4)boot px (Booting from tape )

After booting recovery will start.

Re: OS Recovery from tape

For a complete step-by-step instruction somebody should copy and paste all the 386 pages from the manual here + the complete FAQ and all related information from docs.hp.com ;-)

Start the system, select the tape drive, boot from and interrupt the boot to get the interactive screens.

If both systems, source and target are almost similar, just select a new target disk, hostname and IP address and ==> go.

If your servers are different - it depends.

I don't know what source and target are.

For detailed and step by step instructions see

http://docs.hp.com/en/IUX

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: OS Recovery from tape

Hi,
Appreciate your help.
I am able to restore the OS backup of one production server from tape drive on my this test host.
For the second production server, during restoration, i see the error message
Stop.
config: make did an exit(1)
ERROR: Could not make an executable kernel. An interactive shell will now be
provided. Once you have fixed the problem or a kernel has been built
and placed in /stand/vmunix, "exit" the shell.

I am attaching the log of the whole operation. Thanks in advance for your help.
