Currently we are running HP-UX 11.11 on PA-RISC (9000/800/rp7420)
We have some app requirements to move to 11.23.
It's my understanding that 11.23 is supported on PA-RISC, however PA-RISC architecture is EOSL in 2013?
To cover these boxes long-term would I need to upgrade to itanium?
appreciate input and advice.

The rp7420 will be supported at least until May 2012 or December 2013 depending on the exact model.
As for 11.23, factory support will continue until December 2013 although you will not be able to purchase the release after December 2010.

HP-UX 11.23 or 11.31 is required for Itanium servers. Both releases are available for PA-RISC. You probably should begin planning your upgrade path now. You cannot step from 11.11 directly to 11.31 regardless of the hardware platform.
PA-RISC servers are no longer manufactured so the eventual answer is "yes" to upgrade these boxes you will need to move to Itanium.
The official roadmap lies here:

I don't think it changes my question or James' answer though.

Re: PA-RISC & Itanium and 11.23
The EOSL for rp7420 is still TBD.
(according to public_hp-ux_systems_support.pdf)
Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: PA-RISC & Itanium and 11.23
Just compare the performance of your rp7420 with a the brand new quad-core systems. I believe a 2-socket system could match the performance of your current rp7420.
I believe the cost of a new system, including 3 years of hardware support, matches the cost of hardware maintenance of your rp7420. HP-UX licensing will drop significantly, maybe your software licensing to if it is CPU-based.
And, once the migration is complete, you are covered for long-term.

Re: PA-RISC & Itanium and 11.23
PA-RISC has not been sold for 18 months.
One of my former clients recently moved from PA-RISC to IA-64/Itanium, and nightly batch processing sped up by a lot. Processing time dropped from 40 minutes to 8 minutes on average.
Your mileage may vary. It will depend on the applications you use and the quality of the code and design of those applications.
One thing is clear, due to HP pulling the plug PA-RISC is dead, and IA-64/Itanium on 11.31 is the way to go for servers running HP-UX.
You will need to check with your application vendors for platform/OS support. Many PA-RISC applications will run well in emulation mode (called ARIES).
