Re: Printing Stop in HP-UX

Hi Muhammad,

If server lost the network connectivity to the printer then it disable the printer. You have to enable the printer manually. This is normal process.

So you have to make sure that there won't be any network issue. You can also schedule a cron job to check the printer status in pre-defined period and enable the print queues if it is disabled.

Also check the spooler patch level and install the latest patches.
Best wishes,

Ganesh.

Re: Printing Stop in HP-UX

Shalom,

Good point in reply post 1.

Radical idea. Lets look at the log files, starting with /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

sam might let you view other logs.

I bet there are some clues, written in Unix-ese, but lets see what we find.

Re: Printing Stop in HP-UX

>There is no network issue because this problem in all different offices.

How can you be sure about that ?
Do you have more than one server and each have connection to a different printer and all are stopping at the same time ?

Or is this server in an office and remote offices connect to this server and print to printers in their local offices ?

Your problem description is pointing at a problem on the printer end and most likely a network problem but you were too quick to rule that out with your comment above. You need to provide some more details.

Print queues become disabled (or get hung in common language), when there is a problem with the printer that the server senses. This could be an issue as simple as "Out of paper" or "out of toner/ink" or a "paper jam". Or it can be a more severe problem like a network connectivity issue.

Depending on the nature of your problem, i.e., central server and printers at local offices, all stopping at the same time, or one server one printer, stopping at the same time of the day, the answers can be many. There is not enough details to make a guess here.

Re: Printing Stop in HP-UX

I have below check list

1) Problem occurs in Different offices every office have own printer.
2) Problem occurs in different times also.
3) In head office only line printer we can used.
4) every time i can enable printer service from SAM itâ s working.
5) yes all office connect to One Server and print to their local printer.
6) There is no out of paper, jam our toners problem because can absorb very closely

may be this is problem in HP-UX configuration
please help.

Re: Printing Stop in HP-UX

Hi,

printer queue can also be disabled when printer is just blocked by windows print.
Could it happen that a windows server is printing at that moment?

Re: Printing Stop in HP-UX

Volkmar,

what you are suggesting is highly unlikely in my opinion, unless of course there is a colossal misconfiguration. Windows printing should not 'block' printer. It will just look busy, maybe for an extended period of time if a big print job is coming in. lp spooler is clever enough to buffer the print and wait until the printer status changes.

Since we are talking about remote offices here, I am assuming the connectivity between these offices and the main office, where the server sits, is unknown to me and most likely a connection less than ideal and prone to disruptions. That sounds like the most likely cause but without being on the system and poking around it is hard to tell.

Re: Printing Stop in HP-UX

This is just a guess. Oracle Financials has it's own configuration for printing that can add setup strings for the printer say to switch to landscape mode, etc. Perhaps there's an error in the setup that is causing the printer to go offline. You may want to check the Oracle application end.

Re: Printing Stop in HP-UX

Hi Again,

>>may be this is problem in HP-UX configuration<<

If you strong on this, I would still insists you to upgrade server patch level or atleast update the spooler patches.

In my experience, this kind of many issues have been fixed by installing the latest patches.
Best wishes,

Ganesh.

Re: Printing Stop in HP-UX

It sounds like most of your printers are actually connected to some other system (Windows?) and HP-UX is sending print jobs using the remote lpr/lpd protocol. Unfortunately, this is a primitive protocol (rfc 1179) and has no printer status at all. So conditions like out of paper, paper jam, print server reboot or offline, etc cannot be handled gracefully. If the network is occasionally unstable, printer hangs will be expected.

I would use lpadmin rather than SAM to manage your printers. That way you can work directly with a single printer. However, you may have to stop and restart the spooler and this cause 100% of all print jobs to start over from the beginning.

For printing in different cities, I would abandon use of remote printing and create a special script to send the print jobs with intelligence and recovery. This will require some minor programming on the remote PCs to look in a directory and print the contents. But at least you will have a reliable long distance print system.
