Query on frecover / fbackup

Hi I was trying to frecover the incremental and full backup done a few days back. I notice that deleted files are recover back as well. Isn't incremental backup supposed to "remember" that the file has already been deleted and won't get restored back?

Incremental backup is for taking those files into backup which are modifyed or newly created.

An incremental backup will merely consist of files changed since the last full backup. All it "remembers" are the files it backed up.

You would for a partial restore of these files have to choose what files to restore if you don't want them all recovered.

fbackup does keep a record of what it backs up in a simple text file.

Incremental backup is the process of only backing up the files which have changed since the last backup of any type.

Thanks alot for the information. So what type of backup should we used in order to ensure that files deleted are not restored back? Is it differential backup?

Does fbackup have this type of facility.

Of course a full backup will not restore files that aren't there.

I wouldn't think so. The incremental only has a list of files modified, which doesn't include deleted files. Typically the purpose of frecover is to restore files, some you may have deleted by mistake.

I don't see that. Only full, -0 and various levels of incremental, -1 ... -9.

I hope it isn't too hard to remove those files again.

Thanks alot. I still trying to find a way to do an automated backup (other than full backup) which won't restore files which I purposely deleted.

But it seem that fbackup is not meant for differential backup.

You could make a list of these files. ;-)
Or you could run a find before/after? you did your fbackup to have a list of all of the files that should be there.

If your filenames are unique, you could automate this process, possibly isolating it to specific directories, so you feel more confortable.

If we are talking about 'frecover' then you could add exclusions (-e filename) to your recovery graph file. See the 'frecover' manpages for more details.

You might also 'touch' the file that you do _NOT_ want to recover. By default, unless 'frecover' is run with the '-o' option, 'frecover' will not overwrite a newer file with an older copy. Then, after the recovery you could 'find' all zero-size files that you just created and remove them.

Be aware that 'fbackup' and 'frecover' are deprecated at 11.31 and ('fbackup') will not be available in releases subsequent to 11.31.

You have two general choices:
1) Limit the scope of the backup.

2) Manually do the restore.

What files you back up do not limit restore options if you manually choose the files to restore. frecover has a manual interface.
