RHEL 5 password timeout

At login time I have to change my password, after I enter the current password it asks for the new password. I enter the new password and it ask for it again to verify. Before I can enter it the second time it times out and I get the login prompt. I cannot type the passords in to beat the timeout. Does anyone know where this timeout value is so that it can be increased giving more time to enter the passwords?

Re: RHEL 5 password timeout

What's the login method - remote (e.g. SSH) or local (GDM)?

RHEL 5.1, get same symptoms logging in local on console or using ssh or putty.

Re: RHEL 5 password timeout

Strange that local logons also "time out"..
Does it display any error message before displaying the login prompt? Is there something relevant in logfiles inside /var/log? Why/how did your password expire or got expired?

Re: RHEL 5 password timeout

There is nothing in any log to indicate a failure other than password expired for root and authentication failure.

Re: RHEL 5 password timeout

Rebooting into single user mode and re-setting the expiration/password there could do.
