RX6600 basics

Just got two new RX6600's, hp_ux 11.31U, each came with two 147gb sas drives, how do I get at that 100 odd gig of disc space HP did not use on the factory install. I need more space to install netbackup7 and don't even have enough room to untar the files.
I did move the two drives from slots 7 and 8 to 1 and 2, system rebooted fine. Will this cause an issue later on if I add more drives.

If the answer to 1 is you can't get at it or the answer to 2 is yes it will from h/w address changes is there a good tutorial on a cold install for these boxes, order, things to look out for, etc.
Third question, this box came with the ilo mp and serial port consoles which limits me on using my Adderview KVM so I ordered the vga/ilo/mp cards for both, the only question I could not find an answer to was whether the RX will recognize a usb keyboard in the MP, the Adderview has a vga/usb adapter which works fine on my dozen or so proliant G5 and 6's.
I know, a lot of questions but I needed to start somewhere. If it involves a cold install the sooner the better. Thanks

The normal answer here is, it depends.

This server usually ships with a hardware raid card. You should not need to shift the drive locations to set up raid 1 for the boot volume group.

Disk space.

ioscan -fnCdisk
# gets a list of disks

pvdisplay -v

iocan -m dsf
# gets you persistent disks if you choose.

Once you identify the disk with free space, either lvextend the logical volume you want to install the software on or lvcreate a new logical volume and mount a new file system.

The rx will probably recognize most usb keyboards. Some amount of fun will be required to get it to work with kvm.

You really don't need kvm. The system has an ilo card in it that gives remote console access on the network if plugged in and configured.

Page 31 of the installation manual recommends starting at bay 1 and moving upwards if you ever planning on adding new drives, why they shipped with bays 7 and 8 populated is a head scratcher.
The HP techs that showed up and completed the hardware setup of the 2312fc array and the LTO library said my two installed discs were mirrored already. Sam tells me I have 104gb unused space but darned if I know where or what slice if any it's on.

Both servers are duplicates of each other.
One problem solved, figured out how to use lvm to create a new lv from the existing unused 103gb, used 50gb, keeping an extra 50 in my back pocket for down the road, one down a few more to go.

How about "vgdisplay -v" on each server. It will show you what disks (raid volumes) the HP-UX OS sees and will know if the raid-ed disks are fully allocated.

The 147GB disks will give you about 133GB of usable space. There is some additional loss on the EFI partitioning but not much. You should get close to 130GB of OS space if the raid volumes are all the space on the disks. If not, then you look into checking the raid configuration on each server.

I guess part of what makes it more confusing is I am not seeing the controller config screen like on my proliants where you setup the discs for raid/mirroring, etc. Unless it is in that boot screen, the blue/gray one that comes through the MP and the java app.
I noticed there is a system config choice.
I have not created or mounted the 2312fc array on this box yet.

From the bottom of the vgdisplay output, there is one disk disk volume in vg00 and it has a total 4343 PEs (Physical Extends). The size of each extend is 32Mb (top of vgdisplay output). SO the total size of the disk volume is 4343x32=138,976MB which is ~135.7GB. So it looks like the disk is allocated in its entirety from the raid controller. And it is a raid volume because previously in the ioscan output it is shown as an IR volume (IR=Integrated Raid).

So as previously mentioned the two disks are configured as a mirrored pair in the raid controller.

Netbackup needs a lot of disk space not only to install but to run as well. As it starts to backup data, it maintains a database (catalog) with all the backup files for each session and this catalog can become very large. So you need to add more disk space to these servers, I would add a couple of 300GB disks right away and later on you might even need more space.

That brings a question to mind about the mirroring. As they are mirrored on the controller will it auto rebuild if one disk fails and I replace it like they do on my G5 and G6's which run everything from server 2000, 2003, 2008 and Ubuntu. I will be adding more discs, we will see how the Netbackup install works if I ever manage to get an uncorrupted download from their server, I'd like to have a discussion with the one who decided that media no longer comes with that $40K purchase price.
I have an N class with two mirrored 80gb drives that run runs netback5.0 with no problems, feeds a dual dlt drive hp 60 robot.
This new ultra 1760 with two lto's will make my life easier, no more suitcases to lug home and back weekly.
Are there any good HP forums, I'm probably boring the heck out of the HP moderators.
