RZ partitions MAKEDEV DISKLABEL ??

Hello,

There seem to have lot of confusion or lack of knowledge on my side w.r.t the terms RZ, MAKEDEV, DISKLABEL,offsets etc. Which is essential in TRU64 Administration. I did go through the TRU64 system administration but they dont elaborate onto these terms much.
Kindly suggest from where I can get good understanding of these terms.

Thanks,
sac

I think you may be using old version of the OS.

Check out http://h30097.www3.hp.com/docs/base_doc/DOCUMENTATION/V40G_HTML/APS2RFTE/SCSDDRCH.HTM

This has some details about what you are looking for.

Thanks for the reply.
Does it mean the latest version of TRU64 have different concepts (other than RZ disklabel etc??)

Re: RZ partitions MAKEDEV DISKLABEL ??

After 5.0, RZ* is replaced by /dev/disk/dsk* device names. Disklabel and MAKEDEV are still in use.

I gone through the link you posted. Is ok ...but is not giving much examples to support the doc. Is that all from TRU64 Documentation?

Re: RZ partitions MAKEDEV DISKLABEL ??

there is a lot of online documentation for Tru64.
http://www.tru64unix.compaq.com/docs/pub_page/doc_list.html

on the keywords you mention :
- RZ is used in two settings
1) RZ28 is a (SCSI) disk-type
2) /dev/rz1c is a "device special file" used for IO to a partition on a disk
one for each partiton on disk,
and for each partition there is /dev/rz1c and /dev/rrz1c.
These are IO-structures for the OS to communicate with devices.
This is not TRU64-specific but "unix-style" to adress devices as "files".

- MAKEDEV is a utility to create a set of device special files for a device.
NB on Version 5.x /dev/rzxx and /dev/rrz is "legacy" and replaced by the notation /dev/disk/dsk1c
MAKEDEV itself is also "legacy" on v5.x, instead "dsfmgr" (device special file manager" should be used.

- DISKLABEL refers to the (unix)partition table on the disk
partition-names a to h are used, described by offset and size.
in the partition-table partitions may seem to overlap, but only non-overlapping partitions can be used (active) at the same -time

- offset is starting block of the partition
