Reason hp-ux print jobs hang on queue

Hello All,

My oracle reports sends to hp-ux printer queues hang on queues sometime.
I have to cancel one print job then other jobs print normally.

This is becoming a problem for me,

Any Idea?

No, I don't have any firewall between hp-ux box and printers,

So many possibilities...

But you say the queue is working, it just gets stuck on certain print jobs.

Maybe the print job has some print option that the printer can not translate/handle and it causes it to 'get hung'.

Not very much to go on. Are the printers connected with JetDirect cards or are you using a Linux or Windows print server or are the printers using dumb lpr/lpd printer cards setup as remote printers in HP-UX?

The answer to the hangs is very different depending on how these printers are connected.

you should take a network trace, to see if there is unusual reset for instance.

I think Rita's interpretation looks good.

Check for a "special form" request or some other formatting issue that would prevent page formatting (borders, headers, footers).

There could also be multi-byte special characters imbedded into the data to print.

I summarise solutions as below to check (also for anyone else with same problem),
Check if:
1- print job has some print option that the printer can not translate/handle
2- trace network in both side

Arvin,

Please check (and update) the JetDirect firmware of the printers. Many years ago I had a very similar issue whith especific printer models (LaserJet 4000) and the problem was the JetDirect's firmware revision.

Hint: Try to capture one problematic print job data so you can see if it is random or a reproducible problem (resending the binary file to diferent printers). You can edit -it's easy- the HP-UX spool script to save the data files.
