Reinstalling OS

Reinstalling OS

We received a new HP 9000 N-class server, HPUX 11.0 installed, but the but the configuration is not the way we needed. So I want to blow out everything from the server and install the OS and configure it the way we wanted. How can I remove everything from this server disk and start from the scarch.

Re: Reinstalling OS

There is no need to remove anything from the disk(s) before reinstalling the OS. Just boot from the CD and go through the menus to select the destination disk for the installation, set everything up as you want it, and proceed.

Everything that is on the disk will be overwritten during the installation. There won't be any residual from the original HP-UX installation.

Re: Reinstalling OS

hi,

all you have to do is just do a fresh install/reinstall.

restart your machine and interrupt boot processes, search for bootable devices and boot from your installation CD, all should be done by this...

Re: Reinstalling OS

Hi,

Go for a cold install; No need to remove any existing files. Select appropriate boot media while booting..

Re: Reinstalling OS

Hi,

There is no need for removing anything manually from the server as your N4000 server has just come in. When you reinstall the operating system the installation utility itself removes everything from your boot hard disk as it does the creation of physical boot device... And the other hard disks may not be containing anything unless otherwise any changes were done by you..

Re: Reinstalling OS

Hi,

As the other guys have stated, a fresh install
will everything from the existing installation.
Once you start, you will receive a warning that
there is something on the disk already. This is
a standard message and can be ignored. All
systems these days come with an already installed
operating system, it is called "instant ignition"

Re: Reinstalling OS

I didin't see this mentioned, but do you by chance have an ignite tape from another N-class in your fleet that you could use. Not only does it reinstall your os, but could very possibly be closer to the configuration you desire as it's already been put into production. You will want to interrupt batch mode when doing this, though so you can have the opportunity to do some initial configurations prior to blast-off.

Hope this helps.

Re: Reinstalling OS

Hi:

If all you want to do is resize the filesystems then, consider creating an Ignite recovery tape of the *existing* configuration and then using it to cold-install. You might find that this is a faster way to rebuild your server with patches and Application Software, etc. than actually starting with a Core OS CD, Application CDs, SUpport Plus CD, etc.

Re: Reinstalling OS

Raghuram,

By re-"installing" the OS, you will be "removing" the current configuration.

Make sure you are using the most current CD's to install with (Sept 2001), that way you will have less to patch.

Put the first "core oe and install" CD in, and boot the server, but interput the boot process and alternate the boot address to the CD. Select INSTALL, and have at it.
