longshot -
When I had issues with this (albeit NOT on the 2.4 kernel) it was due to the fact that the installer was looking for the kernel source in /lib/$KERNEL/source - and in the case of my booted kernel that directory did not exist. A simple sym link resolved it for me.... but again 2.4 behavior is different.

Do the logs offer any additional info on what the installer isn't (specifically) finding?

Could you specify the full path what you have.As of now i dont see a similar one.I can try once more.
