I have a Smart controller , two port .
In this controller I have configure mirrors , ion of these mirrors have failed one of the disk members.
I have a two disk that have not been configured neither belong to any configuration.
My question are:
Can I just plug out the failed disk and insert the unassigned disk to replace the failed member.
I do the following command-
# saconfig /dev/ciss4 -A 5 -s 2:15 to add the disk 2:15 to the LUN 5 but the spare can not take effect .
Thank you

Re: Replace of a failed disk in A raid controller HPUX
Yes that can be done. The spare should be added only when the LUN is created or all the devices are functional. Which RAID did you configured ?
Replacing the disk shall solve the issue. But you shall be required to give a command to rebuild the failed disk.

Re: Replace of a failed disk in A raid controller HPUX
I have five lun configure .
The lun 5 is the one that have one member failed , the disk 2:14.
There was not spare configured for this LUN,
My question is can I plug out the failed disk and insert a new one and will be rebuild ?
Thank you ..

You can do that and it should work.

Re: Replace of a failed disk in A raid controller HPUX
When adding a spare disk to the smart array controllers you cannot specify an individual lun. You can only add the spare and this will be used for all luns wherever it is needed.
Just add the unused disk as a spare, not specifying the lun number.
Then it the raid set will rebuild onto that one and then you can replace the failed drive, and this will then become the spare drive for all luns.

Re: Replace of a failed disk in A raid controller HPUX
You could as you wish just replace the failed drive in the correct slot and then the raid should auto rebuild, when new disk comes online.
After inserting the new drive you will need to rescan the array for the drive first though

Re: Replace of a failed disk in A raid controller HPUX
Whitch will be the HPUX command?
I do as follow
#saconfig /dev/ciss4 -s 12:15
and does not work
Some idea.
I am planning plug out the failed disk and plug in the new one , must begin the rebuild process ?

Re: Replace of a failed disk in A raid controller HPUX
doing the command you have tried should work and also looking at my notes the one you tried earlier adding to the lun should too, possibly depending upon the version of the raid software bundle.
However just realised one thing
2:15 is probably not a scsi disk but is the smart array cards processor.
what errors do you get when you try to add the device 2:15?
What does
#saconfig /dev/ciss4
list as available disks left/used?
Also check it with
#sautil /dev/ciss4
post these outputs and we can see what disks you have free
