Syslog displays Autofs error (NFS)

Hi Experts,

I have a script in cron which executs every day except Sunday :

net/z2unix-sysreport.ema.lilly.com/unixops/sysrpt/client/sysrpt

But in recent days it is not getting executed.

when checked in syslog I obsereved the error message.

May 12 09:08:12 yohp19 vmunix: automountd OK
May 12 09:08:12 yohp19 vmunix: automountd not running, retrying
May 12 09:10:12 yohp19 vmunix: automountd OK
May 12 09:10:13 yohp19 vmunix: automountd not running, retrying

This error message is continously observed from past 4 days. So may be this could be reason of the script not getting executed.

I checked in other ITRC docs had restarted the service then too but still the situatuon is same.

#ps -ef | grep auto
root 11 0 0 Dec 9 ? 3:35 autofskd
root 13847 12304 1 12:51:44 ttyp1 0:00 grep auto
#kill -9 11
#ps -ef | grep auto
root 11 0 0 Dec 9 ? 3:35 autofskd
root 13869 12304 0 12:52:08 ttyp1 0:00 grep auto
#/usr/sbin/automountd
#ps -ef | grep auto
root 11 0 0 Dec 9 ? 3:35 autofskd
root 13901 12304 1 12:52:52 ttyp1 0:00 grep auto
root 13899 1 0 12:52:45 ? 0:00 /usr/sbin/automountd

The details of it is below.

#more /etc/auto_master
/net -hosts -nosuid,soft,nobrowse

Could you please guide me in this.

Re: Syslog displays Autofs error (NFS)

Are you sure your network connection between the server and the client is in an up-n-up condition ? As in, no speed duplex mismatches, no firewalls appearing out of nowhere because someone decided one network segment needs to be more secure (to appease an auditor etc.)

Usually, NFS either just works or doesn't work at all, if it is all up to the server settings. Especially considering this behavior cropping up in the last 4 days (presumably you did not do any major change to the system, as in kernel modification, patching, security hardening etc.)

I think you need to talk to the people who are in charge of your network and/or firewall gear.

Re: Syslog displays Autofs error (NFS)

What's in /etc/auto_master?
Have you ping'd everybody successfully?
Are you using ip address or hostnames?
Any DNS changes?
Can you nslookup hostname / ip for all?
