T520 unrecoverable hardware error when booting from RAID5 array after install of HP-UX 10.20 to it

We are having an issue with our T-class (T520) server. We are trying to re-install the core OS on our auto RAID5 SureStore E Disk Array 12H and cannot do so. The HP-UX 10.20 OS installs just fine to the auto RAID5 array, but after the install completes and the system reboots, we get an unrecoverable hardware error (-4) when trying to boot from the new path (2/12.0). We have tried all the RAID5 cabinets (we have 6, 0/4, 2/4, 2/12, 2/20, 2/28) We also have some older non-RAID storage arrays (A3312A) attached to this server and we can boot from the disks in these arrays with no problems, but that defeats the purpose of having our root filesystem on RAID5. The RAID5 cabinets (12H RAID5 arrays) seem to work fine for normal storage use once the system has an OS on one of the non-RAID disks. Once the OS is up and installed on a non-RAID5 disk, we can setup volume groups and logical volumes on them.

We also noticed that when we do and SC to search from the service console, all the RAID5 arrays attached come up with unrecoverable hardware errors and the other non-RAID disk cabinets do not.

Do you guys think we are experiencing a firmware issue? If not, do you have any other ideas?

What firmware version is on your box? Should be 3.91. For the 12H version HP62 was the latest. Do you have these versions?

Hope this helps!

Torsten,

I will check the firmware.

Everyone else,

sea ipl does not work on a t520. The command is SC and the 12H devices show up, but have an unrecoverable hardware error message after them.

There are two types of arrays on these systems (12H (RAID) and A3312A (Non-RAID)). They both work once the OS is installed, but for some reason we cannot boot the OS on the 12H arrays

Re: T520 unrecoverable hardware error when booting from RAID5 array after install of HP-UX 10.20 to it

BTW, the "unrecoverable hardware error" reallay sounds like hardware error. Did the arrays work on this system prior to the new installation? Have a look at the cable connections and termination. Any broken pins? Do you connect with single or dual path? (single path, I guess - from host to A, from A to B and terminated on B)

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
