Details may depend on the hardware model
and/or firmware version. Google can probably
locate more than I can. A while ago, this
was useful:

http://ftp.digital.com/pub/Digital/info/semiconductor/literature/srmcons.pdf

alternatively, SRM_CNSOL_USERS_GDE.PDF (in
some case or other), but that server seems
not to exist (under that name, anyway) these
days. That one's "for Alpha Microprocessor
Motherboards". If you can't find something
better/comparable/suitable, let me know, and
I can put what I have onto my server
somewhere.

Perhaps somewhere under:

I normally use an Alpha workstation, but I
have used TeraTerm.

>>> we're using VT510 Terminal

on the original VT terminal F1 sends xon/xoff signal, F2 is print-screen function.
So this is meant to work with graphics console and keyboard connected directly to the system.
You could try changeing the setup of the terminal (F3) -> keyboard and modify the behaviour of F1 and F2 .

What part of 'serial' do you not understand?

Yes, my reply was in immediate answer to your question above it:

"And the link for a free downloadable application that I can install on my laptop to be connected serially to the server to have console access (like KEA!)."

Ok, so I did not actually provide a link.
Just google: putty download serial.

And yes, I have used PuTTY, to get free terminal emulator access from Windoze to an Alpha server serial console in my basement.

Enjoy!
Hein.
