Tape Drive Error - Digital TZ88

The tape drive we use, was working until 2 weeks ago the backup.log showed the following error: vdump: can't open dev ; [6] No such device or address.

Will i need to remove the device from the system and add it again?

Re: Tape Drive Error - Digital TZ88

Hi,

What is the version of Tru64 Unix. It cannot be the case that tape drive automatically gets disappeared without any modification. Anyhow, you can try to rescan

Tru64 V5.x, try to rescan the device and check if the tape drive is available.

1) hwmgr scan scsi
2) hwmgr show scsi

Tru64 V4.x
1) scu scan edt
2) scu show edt

you can check the device files using file /dev/nrmt0h or any other device file related to tape drive.

Re: Tape Drive Error - Digital TZ88

I run version 4.0f

From the commands given the output is as displayed:
# scu scan edt
Scanning all available buses, please be patient...
# scu show edt
Device: RRD45 Bus: 0, Target: 4, Lun: 0, Type: Read-Only Direct Access

Checking /dev/nrmt0h displays the tape device, however no change to the initial error message which reads as:

/dev/nrmt0h: No such device or address
25803 : Starting a weekly backup on Thu Dec 7 00:55:28 EST 2006 to tape
vdump: can't open dev ; [6] No such device or address
vdump: can't open dev ; [6] No such device or address
vdump: can't open dev ; [6] No such device or address
vdump: can't open dev ; [6] No such device or address
stty: tcgetattr: Not a typewriter

Re: Tape Drive Error - Digital TZ88

Please post output of
# file /dev/nrmt0h
# ls /dev/nrmt*
Also send complete output of
# scu show edt
Can you shutdown a server?
If so send output of
>>> show device
In vino veritas, in VMS cluster

Re: Tape Drive Error - Digital TZ88

It looks like there are hardware or communication problems with the device. The device you see in the output of show edt is a cd-rom.

You should use "show dev" at SRM (console) level and check if you can see the device MK*
