Re: Tape Library

Tape Library

Hello,

We have a Tape Library COMPAQ MSL5000 Series, connected to TRU64 system.

Getting the following error,

/usr/bin/robot show robot /dev/changer/mc1
ROBOT /dev/changer/mc1 is not responding: I/O error.

The tape was working fine until yesterday. One of the tape got stuck in the drive so we manually shutdown the tape library and started.

We can manually move the tapes to slots by using the screen interface on the library but not from the host connected to it.

Looks like /dev/changer/mc1 is not working anymore.
Please find the relevant commands output in attachment.

Anyone can give us some clue?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Tape Library

Please run hwmgr scan scsi and hwmgr show scsi -full

Do you have Data Protector on the system? If you do, you can try using the uma command.

Re: Tape Library

Executed the above commands and here is the relevant part of the same.

SCSI DEVICE DEVICE DRIVER NUM DEVICE FIRST
HWID: DEVICEID HOSTNAME TYPE SUBTYPE OWNER PATH FILE VALID PATH
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
436: 35 bwgc559 tape none 0 1 tape4 [9/0/0]

WWID:0c000008:00e0-9e60-000d-44c8

BUS TARGET LUN PATH STATE
---------------------------------
9 0 0 valid

SCSI DEVICE DEVICE DRIVER NUM DEVICE FIRST
HWID: DEVICEID HOSTNAME TYPE SUBTYPE OWNER PATH FILE VALID PATH
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
437: 36 bwgc559 changer none 0 1 mc1 [9/2/0]

WWID:04100024:"COMPAQ MSL5000 Series 3G31JPM2FEDP"

BUS TARGET LUN PATH STATE
---------------------------------
9 2 0 valid

Point is ..The device files for drive and changer look ok. But it just that somehow system is not able to make use of /dev/changer/mc1 to move the robot inside the library.
We could use the "mt" commands once the tape is inside the drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Tape Library

the output of hwmgr suggests the units are accessible from the os (devicetype is shown).

did you check if any active process still allocates the tapedrive or changer?
"ps -ef |grep mc1" (or tape4).

the scsi-port from changer and tapedrive are interconnected with a short cable, check if properly seated including terminator.

Re: Tape Library

You are right. Even I feel, the system is able to detect the drive and changer. But there are no processes that allocates the tapedrive or changer.

ps -ef shows nothing. Moreover we have rebooted the the host system itself.

Now the attention goes to the SCSI cabling. What should we try? Replugging all the cables from the Library end only or from the host end as well??
How do you identify the cable which interconnects the changer and tapedrive?

Re: Tape Library

the doc calls it "library controller board" not changer.
from your output i don't think you use the fiber channel card.
it's the short cable from the board to the drive.

maybe you just need to put the library online again from the touch screen menu.

maybe video's from this site help ?http://h20464.www2.hp.com/index.html
I cannot capture pictures from this site correctly.
Select storage -? buisness class libraries -> msl5000 series

Re: Tape Library

Right...We have a SCSI connectors/cables.

As far as putting the library online , i tried the touch screen menu. The View section gives some information about the library.

Here are few details about the library,

LIBRARY OPTIONS:

Library remains offline after power up initialisation -- Disabled

AutoPower up an installed Drive after timeout-- Enabled

Unload Mode -- Implicit

Total Reserved Slots 0

Drive/Slot Numbering Zero Based

Library Mode Random

LCD contrast adjust 16

Mail Slot Mode Enabled

Module Configuration Standalone

Here are few details about the SCSI,

SCSI options :

Drive 0 Bus ID : 0
Library SCSI Bus ID : 2
Library SCSI Bus Priority : Enabled
SCSI Mode : SCSI 2
Init Element Starts : Force Inventory
Transport Element 0X0

etc...

But the EDIT section of Library asks for the password which we dont know. Whats the default?

I am going through the videos you have suggested.

Thanks so far. But please suggest if something comes to your mind.

Re: Tape Library

look at this document:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=115&prodSeriesId=254838&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=254838&objectID=c00023637

"NOTE: The library ships with a default service password of 5566"

Your output shows the scsi-id matches that of the unix-hosts

check the touchscreen.
in the attached picture the button "online"
means the device is offline
NB! it not a status, it's an action!
push the button to set online.

furthermore:
- if you manually load a tape can you access the drive from the OS?
like "mt rewind tape4"
- is tape0 in the same library or is it a different unit?
- if in the library does this behave different? (as it is on another bus)

Re: Tape Library

1> I tried the ONLINE button on touch screen menu but wen pressed the front indicator kept on blinking. It stopped only when I again pressed the same tab which was now showing as OFFLINE. So i guess when it shows ONLINE then the library is indeed in ONLINE state.

2> After loading the tape onto the drive manually , the very first attempt to execute the below command gives I/O error. But the next time it runs smoothly
root@test> mt -f /dev/ntape/tape4_d1 online

root@test > mt -f /dev/ntape/tape4_d1 rew

3> But when we try to see the contents of the tape with below command it gives the below shown error.

root@test > vrestore -f /dev/ntape/tape4_d1 -i
vrestore: Date of the vdump save-set: Sat Apr 11 05:32:32 2009
vrestore: unable to use save-set; invalid or corrupt format

vrestore: can't obtain fileset attributes

4> Also please note below cam_status gives some error.

We also tried the option off shutting down the libarary and reconnecting one end of the SCSI connector cable that is between drive and board.

Also the password worked for the EDIT options. It allows us to change the same options for Library/SCSI I posted in my previous reply. But what to change is again a question.

Kindly suggest. And yes thanks so far.

One more update, When I was trying to run the mt and robot commands during that period , we have noticed following binary error logging on the system.
