Two app servers, one with more "system" memory utilization

I've got a couple hp-ux 11.23 app servers, one of them is using Gigs more "system" memory than the other one. The two nodes run the same app and by running misc counts against ps, they look pretty much same-same from a user space process perspective.

Is there any way to tell why (or what) one of the blades is using so much more "system" memory than the other?

One theory I have is that since one of the nodes is a veritas CFS "master" that that is cause, but I can't think of a way to prove or see that that is true.

Any ideas?

can you pls compare the kernel parameters on both the servers.

use #kctune -s to list the kernel parameters

Looks like the only difference is "semmni", could that be a contributor or a red-herring? Looking at number of active semiphores using ipcs, shows the same count across all 4 nodes.

Actually, 2048 seems to be the semmni default. So they are the same everywhere.

What do you see for "swapinfo -tam" for each?

You need to compare all the settings. ninode is one parameter that is very often massively oversized due to an meaningless formula. I didn't see nfile in the list either. Run kctune like this:

kctune | cut -c1-36 > /tmp/$(hostname)_kctune

on each machine. Then run diff on one compared to the machine that is 'normal'.
