USB thumb drive on HP-UX 11.i

Is HP ever going to support other devices connected via USB port other than a keyboard and mouse with HP-UX 11.i? I have been waiting for this functionality for a long time.

I'd say it's more a case of are the manufacturers of these USB devices going to start writing drivers for HP-UX?

I don't see HP taking on Microsoft in the end user market. Thats not what HP-UX does.

Its really the responsibility of the vendors to decide to support the platform.

IT is possible, if you have skills and patience to take say Linux drivers and try to port them to HP-UX yourself.

Hmm, beg to differ.
Thumb-drives / Jump-drives / USB-sticks and the likes have (IMHO) proven to be very handy file interchange media.
Nothing to do with 'taking on' Microsoft, just adding value, flexibilty to hpux. Make it follow the market a little bit.

Again, beg to differ. HPUX could/should do a generic USB mass-storage interface with basic FAT support. Solve once for hundreds of usages. Woudl it not be neat to be able to suck empty you camera (in USB mass storage mode). Or hook up a portable 100+ GB drive? Or indeed the memory stick as requested?
Seems like a perfectly reasonable reqeust to me.

Just an opinion,
Hein.

Re: USB thumb drive on HP-UX 11.i

I suspect it's a matter of economics. Sure, it'd be great to do those things. But I have a D370/2 under my desk. How many people, us sysadmins aside, do you think would actually get close enough to an HP-UX machine to be able to connect a drive?

Seriously, that's not sarcasm--I wonder how many? From what I've seen, there are very few end-users left who have physical access to an HP-UX box. Even the old engineering areas where I used to work don't do HP-UX any more--they use Windows now. I just don't have contact any more with people using HP-UX outside the datacenter.

Re: USB thumb drive on HP-UX 11.i

I'm a little new to this question, but I have to respectfully disagree with both of the assertions that a)noone outside admins touches this hardware and b)engineering applications are moving away from HPUX. I'm an engineer working in support of both the shuttle and international space station programs for NASA, and I promise you that we are moving high-end application use and development away from wintel platforms and onto RISC/other 64 bit "nix" platforms, HPs being one of them that we're beginning to move into because of some specific chip architecture issues. In addition we do in fact tend to use them as end-user machines, not hidden data flingers, and it would be VERY useful to have a generic USB flash/FAT driver set. Surely if open-source Linux can support auto-recognized flash drives Hewlett-Packard can for paying customers.

More to my point, I see that his thread is a little old, so my real point is to find out if anyone has solved this problem? Would anyone reading this have an answer to generic USB device support? Seems a little silly to ship a 20k computer with front-side USB ports that patently can't be used...
