But I thought that "/" is already the root folder and as such, how do you change the permissions of "/" ?

Hi,
you can check with
ls -ld /
and set with
chmod 755 /
Have you ever gone into the directory with root to check if that works.

Hi to all,
Problem resolved and it's indeed the / permissions that have gone awry. The chmod 755 / command works like a charm. Now I'm finally able to su - oracle....whew. Tks, guys for the assistance.

I just had to respond to this to tell you guys how awesome this forum really is. I am having the exact same problem on a Sun workstation. I exhausted all of the online search options on Sun's website and found no solution or anything even close to a solution for this problem. Just for kicks I decided to search the HP forums, which has always been such a useful resource for supporting my HP workstations. And again, this forum has outdone itself...I solved the problem on my Sun workstation with this solution. Thanks for posting the actual solution...many times people forget to post if and we never know what really fixed the problem.
Kudos to all who put so much effort into supporting this site!!
